Walking Toward the Cross

Palms in hand, we entered into the holiest week of the Church's year. Hopefully our Lenten practises have helped prepare us to follow the Lord more closely through the Paschal Mysteries. We hope the Gospel Reflections, articles and podcast help you enter into prayer even though the study continues.

Looking forward to seeing you all on and around campus again after the Easter break.

Discipleship on Campus Team

Palm Sunday
For Palm Sunday we are given two Gospels: Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the account of Jesus’ passion. The first Gospel invites us to enter into Holy Week while the second Gospel points us we are heading in Holy Week — Jesus giving himself on the cross totally for love of us and bringing about our salvation.

How to Be a Winner
For us Christians, Easter is the greatest victory of them all. During his life Jesus won many victories over evil, pain, suffering and diseases. But then there was Good Friday, when everything that Jesus had said and done seemed to come to an end.

Easter Reflection

Sometimes a poet can capture the beauty of the mysteries we celebrate in the Church. This week we offer you this poem written by Gerard Manley Hopkins in 1866, the year of his conversion.

Easter

Break the box and shed the nard;
Stop not now to count the cost;
Hither bring pearl, opal, sard;
Reck not what the poor have lost;
Upon Christ throw all away:
Know ye, this is Easter Day.

Build His church and deck His shrine,
Empty though it be on earth;
Ye have kept your choicest wine—
Let it flow for heavenly mirth;
Pluck the harp and breathe the horn:
Know ye not 'tis Easter morn?

Gather gladness from the skies;
Take a lesson from the ground;
Flowers do ope their heavenward eyes
And a Spring-time joy have found;
Earth throws Winter's robes away,
Decks herself for Easter Day.

Beauty now for ashes wear,
Perfumes for the garb of woe,
Chaplets for dishevelled hair,
Dances for sad footsteps slow;
Open wide your hearts that they
Let in joy this Easter Day.

Seek God's house in happy throng;
Crowded let His table be;
Mingle praises, prayer, and song,
Singing to the Trinity.
Henceforth let your souls always
Make each morn an Easter Day.

“Let Him easter in us, be a dayspring to the dimness of us, be a crimson-cresseted east.”
Gerard Manley Hopkins

Getting Bach on track: How music can save your Holy Week
What has music to do with Holy Week? What has beauty to do with crucifixion? Bach is, rightfully, one of the most respected composers in the tradition, and his St Matthew’s Passion’ and St John’s Passion’ stand out as spiritual masterpieces. Maybe this Holy Week, let’s get acquainted with them.
Fr Daryl Montecillo: Wasting time with God
As a young boy, Fr Daryl Montecillo dreamt of being superman. He wanted to don the blue tights and red cape, flying around the world rescuing people. Realising this wasn’t to be, he later set his sights on becoming a paramedic. But God had a different plan’, according to the…
