Good News

What a beautiful day, we hope you are taking some time to enjoy this lovely Melbourne weather. It has been so great seeing you all back on and around Campus. This Friday the veil of Lent is drawn back once more so that we can rejoice - even on a Friday in Lent. Why are we rejoicing?

SHE SAID YES!

The most beautiful three-letter word we can say to God is 'yes.' This week we can draw inspiration from Mary's yes to God. Let us try to be aware that Jesus wants to be present to our peers on campus through each of our own efforts to say yes to God this week.

Don't forget to reach out to Mahir and Andrew who are on campus every day, grab a coffee, check-in, and grab your copy of Time for God so you can follow along with our Lenten Podcast. Check out some of the great events and activities this week including our Crash Course in Aquinas that starts tomorrow.

We look forward to seeing you on or around Campus.

This week we caught up with Matea Hrkac, a Law/International Relations student at La Trobe University.

You have been part of the Catholic Society at Latrobe for several years now. How does being a Catholic student on campus challenge you?

My degree focuses heavily on discussions relating to public policies, ideologies and values, which can be challenging when applying Christian views and morals to opposing secular viewpoints in the classroom. It requires me to dig deeper into what I believe and why. Being a part of the Catholic Society has enabled me to facilitate these conversations with other students and staff with viewpoints relating to these discussions that I may not have had the opportunity to discover in my classes.

How do you think we can empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ on campus today?

I think we need to continue to remind young people that they have a voice and that their voice matters. Do not be afraid to say what you think, especially in relation to faith. I understand it can feel intimidating to speak up, or you may assume you will feel isolated or attacked if you do. In my experience, you always benefit when coming from a place of truth and love. The best way to share our faith is not to hide it!

Finding others who share similar values will encourage you throughout your degree. You are not alone!

The art of conversation: Tolkien and Lewis
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle offered a great insight into evangelisation recently when he said that we sometimes make things very complicated – Evangelization,’ he said, is a conversation. It is a conversation about Jesus.’ A model example of this kind of conversation is the one between J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.…
